For the November 2026 election, Sunnyvale Safe Streets is endorsing local candidates who are strong supporters of biking and walking. In this post, we endorse Alexander Gvatua and Ilanit Eliaz.
Alexander Gvatua
Foothill-De Anza Community College District, Trustee Area 2 (Central Sunnyvale)

In his short 1.5 years as a Trustee on the FHDA District Board, Alexander Gvatua has already shown that he is a strong proponent of student transportation solutions, including biking, walking, and transit. In his own capacity, he advocated for the Hollenbeck Avenue bike lanes, a necessity for De Anza College students commuting from Sunnyvale. Our interview with Alexander shows that he is knowledgeable in policy matters and how different levels of government work with each other. Transportation is often a multi-jurisdictional problem, and he willingly works beyond his jurisdiction to find solutions. Alexander is easy to talk to, insightful, and follows through. We are lucky to have Alexander serving our community.
Ilanit Eliaz
Fremont Union High School District, Trustee Area 4 (Central Sunnyvale)

New to elected office, Ilanit Eliaz has years of experience working with schools and families. She believes biking and walking are viable means to travel to school. Her own two children primarily biked or walked to school throughout K-12, and she wants to make it possible for other children to do the same. In our interview with her, she was enthusiastic about an e-bike rebate program for North Sunnyvale students and about the creation of a strong city-school-PTA partnership focused on student transportation safety. Ilanit will stand out on the FUHSD Board as a leader for good change.
